About Me

Teaching

With five years of teaching experience under my belt, I bring a wealth of practical knowledge and insights to my role as an instructional designer, with a specific emphasis on the application of teaching theory. This extensive background in the classroom has equipped me with a deep understanding of diverse learning styles, effective pedagogical methods, and the nuances of student engagement. Drawing upon my teaching experience, I am adept at translating educational theories into tangible, learner-centric instructional materials. My familiarity with the challenges and dynamics of the teaching environment allows me to design courses that not only align with theoretical frameworks but also resonate with the real-world needs of learners, fostering an environment conducive to meaningful and impactful education.

Technology

My proficiency in software programs such as Articulate Storyline 360, DaVinci Resolve, and Krita significantly enhances my capabilities as an instructional designer. Articulate Storyline 360 empowers me to create interactive and engaging e-learning modules, ensuring an immersive learning experience for students. With DaVinci Resolve, I can adeptly edit and produce high-quality instructional videos, enhancing the visual and multimedia components of my courses. Furthermore, my proficiency in Krita, a digital painting software, allows me to craft visually appealing graphics and illustrations, contributing to the overall aesthetic appeal of instructional materials. The mastery of these diverse tools not only amplifies the quality of content but also enables me to cater to varied learning styles, fostering a dynamic and effective educational environment.

Art and Design

As a lifelong artist with a deep-seated proficiency in Krita, my journey in the realm of art not only contributes to the aesthetic aspects of instructional design but fundamentally shapes my approach to creating engaging and visually compelling educational content. The intuitive understanding of design principles and creativity cultivated through years of artistic exploration allows me to infuse instructional materials with a unique visual flair, capturing learners' attention and fostering a more immersive educational experience. Moreover, my adeptness in Krita enables me to seamlessly integrate custom illustrations, graphics, and visual elements, adding a personalized touch to the learning materials. This artistic background serves as a foundation for innovative and effective instructional design, emphasizing the importance of creativity and visual appeal in conveying complex concepts and making the learning journey both captivating and enriching.

Flagship Project

Drowsy Driving is a gamified eLearning experience aimed at helping truckers implement strategies to prevent

The 5 Step Process

Cathy Moore’s Action Mapping

The process begins by collecting a team of stakeholders and subject matter experts (SMEs) to map out an actionable end goal for the project. In this case the goal is to reduce fatigue related trucking accidents within the company by 20% by next year.

Visual Based Mockups

First, the color scheme of blues and grays was chosen to evoke a feeling of night and drowsiness to immerse the user. Once approved, Krita, a digital illustration program was used to create custom vector images using the color scheme, involving the stakeholders throughout the process.

Create Learning Objectives

Next a learning objective was created using Bloom’s Taxonomy that is both actionable and measurable. The learning objective for Drowsy Drivers is: Truckers will be able to implement effective strategies to prevent & manage drowsiness while on the road.

Prototyping and Final Development

With the visuals and story board combined, it was time to create interactive prototypes in Articulate Storyline 360. The project has both custom activities and custom quizzes built from the ground up. The drag-and-drop game has 35 separate triggers all working together to create a seamless learning experience. The reaction time game is a completely unique and handcrafted game meant to engage the end user in new ways of learning.

Text Based Story Board

Once the action map and the learning objective have been established and approved. It’s time to create a story board and script. The focus for Drowsy Drivers is creating an experience where the learner is the teacher, maintaining a conversational tone and low-stakes assessment, all of which are backed by research based pedagogy.

Project Features

  • Custom Visuals: All visuals were custom made in either Krita or Articulate Stroyline 360.

  • Custom Animations: All animation paths and triggers were custom made to create a novel learning experience.

  • Prescriptive Feedback: throughout the game the end user is given hints from the truck driver they are trying to teach.

  • Gamification: Each learning experience is turned into an interactive game to engage the learner throughout the entirety of the lesson.

  • Scenario Branching: The player has several chances to choose for themselves which rout they want to take.

Research Based Pedagogy and Theory

  • ADDIE: This process was used as the foundations for work flow.

  • Cathy Moore’s Action Mapping: Used to focus on the desired outcomes of the stakeholders.

  • Bloom’s Taxonomy: Used to bridge the desired outcomes of the stakeholders with the learning experience of the end users through well thought out actionable and measurable learning objectives.

  • Gagne’s 9 Events: Used as the structure of the story line to create a well organized and accessible learning experience.

  • Mayer’s Principles: The structure of the visual design of the project.

  • Kirkpatrick’s 4 Levels of Evaluation: This evaluation theory was used to create the quiz to have the test align with the desired learning outcomes.
